Dateline: Brisbane

So, after a very fine month of exploring Australia's southeast - the states of Victoria and Tasmania and Sydney - we finally landed in our new "hometown" of Brisbane yesterday.  It felt a little odd, that after that nice holiday we only had to fly for two hours rather than 15!

We were met at the airport by our host, Allen, who, with his partner Beryl, have ALREADY been very kind and hospitable.  They took delivery of our two duffels and one travel pack, which we shipped up from Sydney, and stored them for us for the past few weeks.  Their 100- year old house [as I am writing, at 5:30pm Wednesday, the sky just opened up with a tropical downpour!] sits in the suburb of Red Hill not far from the University of Queensland health sciences campus where I'll be working.

The mother-in-law (or, as Allen suggested, the teenager get-away) apartment is quite nice, spacious compared to the places we've been staying.  Allen and Beryl stocked the fridge with all kinds of goodies, including homemade preserves … Yum!  It has a cute little balcony overlooking his "chooks" (chickens), storage space, a dishwasher and washing machine, all the comforts of home, and that's how we're feeling right now.  We've explored the neighborhood a bit (in fact, Kate is off getting a massage nearby), bought groceries, and just enjoyed the bright, airy apartment.

Tomorrow I'll walk to the UQ School of Population Health building for an orientation and to meet some new colleagues.

A new chapter has begun!
